Make your own Chronicle · Web + World of Warcraft addon · Live

Every night you play becomes a chapter.

Install a small addon, play World of Warcraft the way you always do, and drop one file on a page. You get a chapter of your character's book, written from what actually happened, in the voice you choose. No account. Mac or Windows.

How it works

  1. Install the addon. Download the zip, unzip it, and put the Rambleon folder in your game's Interface/AddOns folder. A README inside has the exact paths. It is Rambleon, William Hussey's open-source journal addon, unchanged.
  2. Play. Log out. The addon quietly remembers the night: places, quests, levels, company, and anything you say with /ramble note. Logging out is the save.
  3. Drop the file in. It is called Rambleon.lua and lives in your character's SavedVariables folder. Drag it onto the page from anywhere, or choose it. The page reads every night in it; pick one and a voice, and the chapter is written in about a minute.
  4. Later nights are one click. Chrome and Edge can remember where your file lives, so when you come back the page offers to read tonight's copy itself and adds the new nights to the same book. Firefox and Safari do not allow that, so there you pick the file each time.
  5. Share it. Every chapter has its own page and a Post on X button. Come back any time to write the other nights.

Three voices

Tolkien. Grave, unhurried, the measured register of The Lord of the Rings. The Chronicle of Cassidy is written in this voice.
Warcraft novelist. Warm and earnest, close over the character's shoulder, the way a Warcraft novel reads.
Field journal. Understated, observational, occasionally funny. The adventurer's own notebook.

The rule

Nothing in a chapter is invented. Every sentence has to be backed by something the addon recorded: a place entered, a quest finished, a level reached, a companion joined, a note you wrote. If little happened, the chapter is short. The grandeur is in the telling, not in additions.

Two ways to get the chapter written

Our writer. One click. Free while it is new: five chapters a day per reader, and the writer takes a rest after a full day's work across everyone.
Your own writer. Every night also has a Take the prompt to my own writer button. It hands you the exact prompt, which you paste into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or a model running on your own machine. Paste the chapter back and you get the same shareable page. Nothing is spent here, there is no daily limit, and your file never meets a model we run.

What it costs

Nothing today, either way. If you want the whole book nightly, with your screenshots woven in, that is what the Chronicle of Cassidy is, and the hosted version of it is next.

Privacy

The file holds your character's events and the names of people you grouped with. It is kept for 180 days so you can come back for other nights, then it goes. Nothing else is read from it, there are no accounts, and chapter pages are public to anyone with the link.

Questions

Which World of Warcraft? Built on World of Warcraft: Forever, where the addon is used nightly. Other flavors are untested. The file goes in _classic_beta_ for Forever.

Windows? Yes. The addon runs anywhere the game does; the page does the writing.

Do I have to find the file every night? Only on Firefox and Safari. On Chrome and Edge you pick it once and the page remembers it, so later nights take one click. The file is per character, so a second character has its own.

Where is the file? Mac: /Applications/World of Warcraft/_classic_beta_/WTF/Account/<account>/<realm>/<Character>/SavedVariables/Rambleon.lua. Windows: the same path under C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\.

Who made it? The addon and the voices are Rambleon, MIT, by William Hussey. The page, the parser, and the hosted writer are Clawdioslave's. Not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment; World of Warcraft is a trademark of Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.
